Scion FR-S Soapbox – Fasten Your Seat belts

The days of putting together old beaten down pieces of Soapbox Derby cars for the upcoming neighborhood race are long past gone. Those cars were probably constructed out of ancient crumbling-to-dust materials, cable brakes and rocky wagon wheels that would not have held the weight of the occupants. The very renowned builder of concept cars Five: Axis has come up with an upcoming Soapbox Derby. This has been brought together by Red Bull and is unlike any other Soapbox Derby. This is much more than a regular-built-out-of-the-backyard scraps material.

This little beauty is a custom-one off fiberglass with a micro-body based on the super-stylish Scion FR-S Concept that was recently introduced to car enthusiasts at New York Auto Show that was held in April. Five: Axis is intimately connected with Scion, Lexus and Toyota and they haven’t really changed the metallic red paint that was used on FR-S concept car the first time.

Although the appearances are deceptively from the era of the 1950s, the technology is remarkably up to date. Being misled by the vintage looks could be a gross error of judgment on the part of the car buyer. He couldn’t be more wrong as the custom aluminum space frame features a sturdy pair of Wilwood disc brakes and a TEIN coilover suspension. But all this technology does not mean if there are no capable hands to navigate the steering wheel. This wonder car will test driven by the eminent Formula D driver Dai Yoshihara, who also navigates The Falken Tire Nissan 240SX. To say, he knows quite a few about grip as well since he also competes in the Redline Time Attack Turner Car Championship in an imported Civic Type R.

However, it is not known properly if Dai’s expertise is really relevant to the soon to be coming Redbull Soapbox derby race. The race is said to be held soon and it will be one of its kind. The event is a perfect platform for Dai to exercise his innate driving skills and put the car through its paces. And we kid you not, there will be plenty of ground for you to test the car’s paces, NASCAR- style banks, myriad of sweet jumps and sharp 90 degree turns.

Toyota has been teasing us with the idea of a concept car for ages and now the company is finally set to unveil the street version of the FR sports cars but with a minor seemingly impossible change, this one does not possess an engine. It sounds like something daredevils would love to try out but it comes at a high price. It does resemble the cardboard-ramshackle boxes that kids would frequently injure themselves with, but this does comprise of a few top quality components, to redeem itself.
